Portugal Removals Health and Safety Policy
Portugal Removals is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and welfare for all employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and associated services. Effective health and safety management is an integral part of delivering reliable domestic and commercial removals, packing, handling and transport services.
This policy sets out our overall approach to health and safety across our operations, including handling, lifting, storage, vehicle use and on-site work at customers premises.
Policy Aims
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and disruption to business operations. We seek to achieve this by identifying and controlling risks associated with our services, promoting safe systems of work and continually improving our health and safety performance.
Portugal Removals will provide the resources, time and support necessary to implement this policy and ensure it remains relevant to the nature and scale of our removals activities.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Portugal Removals has overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. Management will ensure that this policy is implemented, communicated and regularly reviewed. They will lead by example, promote a positive safety culture and make sure that health and safety considerations are included in planning and decision making.
Management responsibilities include identifying significant risks associated with removal and storage services, implementing appropriate control measures, ensuring employees are competent to perform their roles and monitoring compliance with safe working procedures.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Portugal Removals has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions at work. Employees must follow all safety instructions, training and company procedures. They are required to use equipment correctly, report hazards or incidents without delay and co-operate fully with any health and safety initiatives.
Employees must never disregard safe practices, remove safety devices or attempt tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised. Unsafe behaviour, negligence or deliberate misuse of equipment may lead to disciplinary action.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Portugal Removals will carry out regular risk assessments for all key activities, including packing, lifting, loading, unloading, transport, storage and work at customers premises. These assessments identify potential hazards and determine suitable controls to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Based on the findings of risk assessments, we will develop and implement safe systems of work and method statements. These will cover, for example, safe manual handling techniques, use of trolleys and lifting equipment, stair work, operating in confined spaces, working around traffic and protecting customers property from damage.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of the removals profession and presents specific risks of strain and injury. Portugal Removals will provide appropriate training in correct lifting and carrying techniques, team lifting, use of mechanical aids and identification of loads that cannot be safely handled manually.
We will supply and maintain suitable equipment to support safe handling, such as sack trucks, dollies, lifting straps, ramps and protective covers. Employees must inspect equipment before use, report defects and use only the equipment that is suitable for the task and load involved.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Safe operation of vehicles is essential to our removals services. All drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic rules and operate vehicles in a responsible and courteous manner. Portugal Removals will ensure that vehicles are regularly inspected, maintained and kept roadworthy, with safety-related defects reported and rectified promptly.
Loads must be properly distributed, secured and protected to prevent movement, damage or risk to others during transport. Drivers and crews must take account of access restrictions, weather conditions, route planning and safe parking at collection and delivery locations.
Work at Customers Premises
When working at customers homes, offices or other premises, Portugal Removals will act with care and consideration to protect both people and property. Our teams will assess access routes, stairs, floor surfaces, lighting and any site-specific hazards before commencing work.
Where necessary, we will use floor protection, corner guards and other protective materials, and we will work in a way that minimises obstruction and trip risks. Customers will be informed of any limitations or safety concerns that may affect how items can be moved or positioned.
Training, Information and Supervision
Portugal Removals will provide employees with the training and information they need to work safely and competently. This includes induction training for new starters, role-specific training for drivers and porters, refresher training on manual handling and toolbox talks on relevant safety topics.
Supervision will be proportionate to the experience of staff and the complexity of the work. Supervisors and team leaders will monitor working practices, correct unsafe behaviour and support staff in following safe procedures.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated or adequately controlled by other means, Portugal Removals will provide appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety footwear, gloves and high-visibility clothing. Employees must use this equipment as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, near misses, injuries and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly through the company reporting process. Portugal Removals will investigate incidents to understand their causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. This includes learning from incidents, responding to feedback from employees and customers, and reviewing our risk assessments, procedures and training in line with operational changes.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in our operations, best practice and applicable requirements. The policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers and other interested parties on request.
By working together and following this policy, Portugal Removals aims to provide a safe, professional and dependable removals service for all customers.
